Funeral care bill moves through senate

Intro: Missouri lawmakers passed a bill on Thursday that takes a hard line on the funeral business. Brian Jarvis in Jefferson City has more.

OutCue: SOC Missouri's Senate has voted to provide more protections for Missourians who buy their funerals in advance. The measure was prompted by a St. Louis-based company that failed to provide funerals for 55,000 Missourians after declaring bankruptcy. The bill's sponsor is Southwest Missouri Senator Delbert Scott.
 He says customers can save big when the system works.

Description: If you live another thirty years, you're going to have that quality of service which may have cost, if you go out and buy it thirty years from now, another five thousand dollars. 

The bill faces one more Senate vote before going to the House.

OutCue: SOC  Pre-need burial dealers would face strict state standards under a a measure given first-round approval by Missouri's Senate.  The bill comes in response to the 2008 bankruptcy of a St. Louis-based company that robbed 55,000 Missourians of their pre-paid funeral expenses.   Although no opposition emerged, Saint Louis County Senator Jane Cunningham asked for more assurance.
